Agriculture Panchangam
Soil and Climatic Conditions:
Bhendi can be grown in wide range of soils. Alkaline, Saline soils, soils with poor drainage are not good for this crop. Optimum PH range of 6.0-6.8. It grows well in loose, friable, well-drained sandy loamy soils rich in organic matter. It grows best with a temperature range of 24-27°c.
Seed Rate:
Seed rate for Bhendi: For Rainy season crop: 4-6 kg, summer crop: 7-8 kg.
Seed Treatment:
Seed treatment with Imidacloprid 5 g/kg seed & next treat the seeds with 4 g Trichoderma viride.
Field Preparation:
Plough the land 4-5 times. Well decomposed FYM 6-8 tons is incorporated at the time of land preparation. Seeds are sown on ridges (or) flat soil. If soil is heavy, sowing should be done on ridges.
Types Of Cultivation:
Line Sowing: Seeds are sown in the main field in a line. This method ensures better germination, reduces seed requirement & facilitates intercultural operations.
Spacing:
Rainfed crop: 60cm x 30cm for row to row and plant to plant. Summer crop: 45cm x 15-20cm for row to row and plant to plant.
Intercropping:
Bhendi + Onion (2:1). Bhendi + Cucumber (2:1)
Weed Management:
Pre-emergence application of Pendimethalin 30% 1.2 lit in 200 lit water. One hand weeding at 20-25 days after sowing effectively controls the weed growth.
Water Management:
Critical soil moisture stages of Bhendi Flowering & Fruit development. Irrigated 7-8 days interval during rainy season. Irrigated 4-5 days interval during summer season.
Nutrient Management:
24 kg Phosphorous & Potash (in the form of SSP & MOP) add during the last ploughing. Nitrogen: 48 kg in 3 split doses during last ploughing, 30th & 45th day crop (in the form of Urea).
Intercultural Operations:
At 25th, 30th day crop hoeing should be done, is mainly intended to control weeds & provide aeration to the soil. Earthing up in the rows should be done in rainy season.
Flowering and Maturity Stages:
Flowering begins from 35 to 40 days after sowing. Flowering stage: Spray 10 g urea in lit water, so that it reduces 20-25% usage of Nitrogen fertilizer & also increases yield. Fruits are harvested when the pods are still mature, young & tender. They are harvested at an interval of 2 to 3 days. The best time for harvesting 6-7 days after opening flowering. Mature pods are fibrous & tough.
Harvesting Methods:
Harvesting should be done in the morning because fruits make a lot of growth during night. Fruits can be removed from the plant by cutting with a sharp knife.
Yield For Different Cultivation Methods:
On an average of 4-5 tons/Acre.
Post Harvest Handling:
Precooling: Harvested fruit must be precooled to remove excessive field heat. Sorting & Grading: Grade the produce on the basis of quality factors & Sort out bad, rotten (or) broken from the good produce. Cleaning: Separated produce is cleaned and then dried. Packaging: Pack in bags for convenient handling. Storage: Place the produce in appropriate stores to avoid contamination & spoilage.
Organic Products can be used:
FYM: Reduces the usage of 20-25% Nitrogen Fertilizer. Application of organic manures like Neem cake, Poultry manures improves the plant growth & yield. It is possible to reduce the use of fertilizer by using Neem cake & Poultry manures. Place Yellow sticky traps in the field in order to monitor the Whitefly. Neem Powder 100kg/Acre add during ploughing.
